Lament of the Troops on the Death of Ivan the Terrible

Recorded from Simbirsk

O, our father, you bright moon !
You shine, moon, the whole dark night:
Shine out, moon, over stone-built Moscow !
In stone-built Moscow, in holy Russia,
Within the Upsenski Cathedral,
A young soldier was standing sentry,
Standing sentry, and praying to God,
Praying to God, and lamenting in tears:
“Rush down from the mountains, O fierce storms !
Scatter, O storms, all the golden sand;
Be rent asunder, damp mother earth,
Split open, coffin lid,
Fly apart, fine white shroud,
Stand forth, stand forth, orthodox tsar,
Our orthodox tsar, Ivan Vasilvich !
All Moscow is in an uproar,
All the troops have mobilised !
