The True Cross

The religious motive has also been urged as the true cause of various wars.  The Spanish and Portuguese conquests of the Americas were made in the name of the “true cross” and of the Christian religion as well as in the support of the kings of the conquering countries.  These conquests might perhaps better have been characterized as in the interest of the conquerors who sought for treasure, power, political preferment, and titles of nobility; in the interest of a powerful ecclesiastical organization and of various religious orders, rather than for the sake of spreading the teachings of Jesus whose own conduct was so definitely opposed to such acts ….
